In Australia, the government currently spends billions of dollars a year fighting fires in parks and forests. According to the Department of Environment, more than half of wildfires are caused by humans. The agency cites “unattended bonfires, trash burning, carelessly thrown cigarettes and intentional arson” as the main causes of these fires.
Other fires caused by climate change could also play a role if trends towards longer droughts and hotter conditions continue. Whatever the reasons, we know that educating people about the dangers of uncontrolled fires is vital.
